Today we were lucky enough to receive a talk from Ollie Allgrove, the executive producer at 'Passion Pictures' who talked to us about the background of his work and the best way to make a pop video. He started by talking about the background of the company and how they make: feature films, music videos and commercials. As a 28 year old company, it has been very successful as it has won 3 oscars and many other awards. I also learnt that a director is a leader and that the music business is always looking for new talent. YouTube has completely revolutionised the way the music industry releases videos, with some videos receiving over a billion hits, it's a perfect way to introduce a new artist and get them known. Budgets are increasing as labels want to get more hits online then other artists. The way directors are chosen is by using a commissioner who rings a production ccompany and they find a group of film directors and the band picks the one they like the most.

Creating a Video

  • The brief- background of the artist, target audience, what is the song (lyrics included) .
  • Treatment- is where a director gets to put their ideas down on paper for the first time, it is the creative idea realised.
  • After you have your check, you work towards the shoot. This is the fun and stressful bit, all the concentration of work comes together. On set the shouldn't be any time when your not sure whats happening.
  • Most music videos try to get everything done in one day as time is money
  • By the time you get to the shoot there should be no questions left
  • The edit is just crafting, story telling, you get to dictate what the audience see and when. Make sure every scene is covered well!
  • The key rule is you shouldn't have to fix anything in post production!
